Happy New Year!
We made it to 2010.
This will be the year of achieving greater goals by pressing through our limitations to get Hope for the Child to the level that we want it to be.
Thanks to all of you for being with us during this journey.
In 2009 we have come to realize that despite the uncertainty, we are commited to our mission and the children we serve.
We look forward to working with all of you again in the 2010.
We have an urgent and serious matter on hand and we need your help today.
Kenya has been experiencing heavy winds and rains in the last week. Read full story here: Torrential rains kill 30 as dozens go missing in Kenya
So heavy are those rains that the roof and ceiling caved in at the Menya Home where Jashon and Mary Menya, our project directors, as well as the other 10 orphaned children live. They did not have Home Owner's insurance policy that covers for this so the cost of repairs have fallen upon us.
These floods have affected both bedrooms, the living room, 3 windows, and 2 doors. I spoke with the team on the ground on Monday and they are flooded in the house with water damage. Everyone is safe, the children are okay, but the rooms that still have a roof and ceiling are leaking, so they have buckets all around the house. They have lost some documents and furniture. Public transport has been difficult; cars have suffered damage and bridges have experienced flooding making it impassable. The death toll has risen to 30. The slums, which is where most of the orphans we serve are from, are in bad shape. It is still raining and the country is in a state of emergency.

Our school, Arise N Shine Academy began their sessions on Monday. Only half of the 140 children we serve showed up for opening day. We believe that the rains have hindered the rest of them from making it to school and we are yet to realize the full impact of the rain in the slums. Our team in Kenya will begin visiting the slums in the next week to check on the children to make sure that they survived the rains.
Meanwhile we need to raise funds to fix the roof, 2 doors and 2 windows at the home today.
We estimate the cost of repairs to be approximately $2450.
We do not have any time to lose.
We need your help at this time of dire need.
Please send me an email noting your pledges and how much of this goal you can donate to help us put a roof over these children's heads.
Because of donors like you, we have been able to provide food, education, clothing and basic medical attention to these orphans in the past years.
Let us pool to get through this together.
Talk to your friends and families so that we can meet this goal today.
Our next meeting is Wednesday Jan 13 at 6.45pm. Please check our website for meeting location and details. Come and hear all about how far we have come and the plans we have as we look forward to the rest of the year.
